All the above examples are universally recognized by everyone. There are many, many more. Based on the same examples, you can see that in a trance-like state, your consciousness is shifted, not lost. Your will power is diverted, not relinquished.
Most often this shift happens passively and spontaneously. As such, your mind naturally goes in and out of trance states on a regular basis every day. You obviously do not lose consciousness or give up your will power, but continue along with life as usual—whether you are in a trance or not.
Hypnotic trance is enjoyable, which is why people go into it so often.
What is interesting about these shifts into hypnotic reality, is that they can be "induced" through various methods.
When you walk into a movie theater, you are paying to be induced into a state of mind where you can experience the "reality" of romance, thrill, fright, laughter.
You channel surf and stop at a certain channel. You set down the remote. You begin to watch, and let the TV—and its endless commercials—induce you into its own hypnotic "reality."
This induction process can become very powerful, as when a skilled hypnotist speaks in a hypnotic voice, and carefully directs your subconscious mind. As the hypnotist says certain things in certain ways, your mind begins to shift into a hypnotic trance. In such a case you are allowing language to put you into that trance. Positive therapeutic change can result.
Stage hypnotism is especially powerful because many suggestive influences are working simultaneously: expectation, the hypnotist's amplified voice, the audience's reactions, the stage lights, the dynamics of performance. Stage hypnotism has been described by the famous behaviorist, Dr. Theodore X. Barber, as "the most powerful social influence phenomenon known to man."
So go ahead. Feel free to take full advantage—relax your mind and LAUGH YOURSELF INTO THE TWILIGHT ZONE!
